Tabor Feb 2020

Post-tour trip down to Tabor to cover the Bechyne route 113s, with recently reinstated 113001 a massive winner and two diagrammed out in the afternoon. However with Hurricane Sabina (a developed UK Storm Ciara) blowing through our chances of getting them before the place degenerated into a farce were low. We did, but the weather soon caught up saw a six hour trundle back to Prague…

We had missed our plus at Tabor by miles, so lunch and a beer then out to view 113002 working the all day turn, seen here bringing the 1201 Bechyne – Tabor in. Yes the light really was this strange at this point!
The first section out of Tabor runs alongside local streets, 113002 is just crossing ulica Husova as it drops down to the river bridge
There we go, the gold at the end of the rainbow! After years dumped out of use, 113001 had been put through Prerov emerging in late 2019. Seen with two refreshed shiny coroprate 010 trailers before backing into Tabor. Lovely.
113001 departs Slapy where we leapt for ‘002 back. This was wise as the branch was closed not long after with both sets stuck at Bechyne end due to trees coming down.

Despite the investment in locos and stock recently, this is to be the last few years of these locos – likely any locos – on this unique, lightweight branch which is to be re-electrified at standard 25kV by 2023, doing away with this 1.5kV DC outpost. This will also mean the end of the heritage 100 and EMU use which are much celebrated due to this being Czech’s first electrified railway (as opposed to tramway, despite it being very much a tramway feel!)

Brno Oldies

Weekend in Brno to push away the January blues. With new region-led management of the Jihomoravsky region the writing is finally on the wall for the Brno cross-city 242s, just the excuse for a trip. They should see service until late 2021 when new region-owned carts arrive. Sadly the intermediate period sees CD cutting all costs – evidenced by shortened rakes and internal condition already, and also the removal of the regional rover as only IDS JMK tickets are now available on all Os/Sp/R trains in the area.

242260, Brno, having just terminated after working the 1830 from Tisnov. This loco has been through a mini-overhaul at Prerov, presumably for life extension and had its paintwork patched up rather than receiving corporate blue.
242234 rolls into Cebin on the 0830 Tisnov – Breclav. Overnight snow and think fog made for an atmospheric if cold morning!
Absolutely hanging 230058 leads 230100 and a 742 through Brno Reckovice with part of the great european log merry go round, running bang road due to a classic SLW possession for minor maintenance tasks being carried out.
242260 notches up away from Kurim on the 0837 Zdar n S-Vranovice, which would be terminating at Modrice due to yet more engineering work taking place on the Breclav line.
242246 heading north on the 0953 Brno – Zdar n S. This turn at least retains the previously used load 4, many having now been shortened to load 3.
242227 in the later and more common corporate colours gets away from Brno Kralove Pole with the 0941 Breclav – Tisnov. Within an hour or so the snow had all melted away and I had a flight home to catch sadly!

Praha Gorillas, August ’18

Another short post as I’m finding time to get through the last trip. Here we have a small gallery of the excellent ‘Gorillas’ both ZSSK dual voltage and the Czech DC versions. A 150’2 would have been nice to complete the set but these now have a limited scope of work compared to the last few years. Half of these are even lineside (admittedly, only at Liben)! So then, more photos of top engines…

cd-151007-liben-2018

151007 at Liben on the 1224 Praha Zilina, our taxi move out to Liben

zssk-350018-liben-2018

350018 roars away on the 1324 Praha Zilina. Right toss up what is a smarter livery between the modern ZSSK and CD colours, both suiting these locos and stock well.

cd-151016-liben-2018

Only a few kms to go for EC 116 the 0539 Warsaw Wschodnia – Praha which has been in the more than capable hands of 151016 from Bohumin. The modern CD livery really looks good in full rakes like this with the darker bodyside on the resturants (second vehicle) adding interest.

cd-151023-liben-2018

Damn cloud! 151023 retains original ‘DC’ livery with orange stripe and is heading for Ostrava on the 1342 ex Praha which is a semi-permanent substitution for a “rancid snake” cart.

cd-151019-liben-2018

151019 1424 Praha Warsaw. If only all long distance trains in Europe remained long trains of quality stock (with a full barcar of course) with decent endemic power on the front…

cd-151004-111031-praha

Carrying an earlier version of CD blue, 151004 arrives at Praha with the empties from Praha ONJ (CSD) for the 0824 Zilina. In very NSE fashion this livery style gave way to flat bands rather than sloped colours at the locos end.  Flatiron 111031 shows off its shiny colours in the current blue livery as station pilot too.

zssk-350001-cd-151001-praha

And to finish on the very first. There was a bit of a shambles occoruing at Praha which saw 350001 line up alongside 151001 which is nice. Heritage Slovak repaint ‘001 working the delayed 1751 Bratislava, had fetching 350016 to go inside from the HS then the sleeper from another platform and then a prolonged brake test meaning 151001 arrived alongside on the 1824 Navsi. 350001 dates from 1973, pretty good going for early high speed dual voltage technology – 43 of the 47 CSD gorillas built remain in traffic with the only lost examples being serious accident damage.

Just some 242s, August 2018

Latest CD sortie will be split into a few posts, here is a selection of these Skoda beasts which were as always a high priority. With some different company on this trip there was more time for photos and I’m pleased to have pictured some of the class going about the same duties they have for many years.

cd-242267-nepomuk-2018

242267 restarts from Nepomuk on the 1008 Plzen – Horazdovice local

cd-242276-stahlavy-2018

I’ve leapt at Stahlavy off these many times, but always been straight back on the move after the trains cross at the next shack. With the sun out we see 242276 arriving on the 1208 Plzen – Nepomuk and the half brake behind the engine is basher friendly way round too – lovely!

cd-242239-stahlavy-2018

As usual, all over red 242239 was out and about and brings the 1308 Plzen – Horazdovice into Stahlavy. Bar a few carts on short extras all trains along here are operated by 242s for now a real throwback to a classic loco hauled railway and – for me at least – an absolute joy.

cd-242216-veseli-2018

After re-engining the 0602 Plzen – Brno at Bud, 242216 eases into Veseli nad Luzini after using the rebuilt racetrack which really seems them open the taps. We’d done a 362 down from Praha and leapt here for 242 power into Bud.

cd-242269-bud-2018

After being detached from the 1527 Brno – Plzen 242269 waits for orders to be stabled for the night, its coach has also come off R660 as a Fridays only strengthener as far as Bud. A classmate would have worked the service forward to Plzen whilst we (eventually) had a 362 back to Praha, which is deep in DC land so very un-242 friendly!

cd-242217-brno-2018

All of the above photos were of Plzen’s locos whereas Brno’s allocation now has a smaller sphere of work concentrated on the cross-city Tisnov/Brno/Vranovice axis. Looking great in a very clean coat of the original red and cream livery, 242217 is on the 1000 Tisnov – Vranovice

cd-242209-brno

This train is booked for a “regiopanther” cart but they were obviously short again as the 1101 Brno – Letovice was left to the capable old hands of 242209.

cd-242234-brno-2018

242234 brings the next cross-city service into Brno, working the 1030 Tisnov – Breclav

ids-242263-hodonin

Many 242s have now been sold to private operators as the passenger work is slowly but surely lost to the march of alleged progress, one such example is 242263 which is now in the hands of IDS and stabled at Hodonin with the mighty 749162. Due to the sale conditions from CD a paperwork fiddle is carried out upon refurbishment and the locos take the identity of very scrapped ex-Bulgarian cousins, this one claims to be “45193” only it really isn’t!

Ceska Trebova Open Day

A few phots from September 2014’s Ceska Trebova Depot Open Day – loads on site! We weren’t too sure what to expect and really went to scoop the 111 in for cab rides but it was well worth going. With two roundhouses, another display around the main turntable and then the demics there must have been the best part of 100 locos knocking about. It was completely help yourself to cabs etc although clambering in and out without spilling beer was a bit problematic!

Czech Republic: SPP Tisnov Event 2012

After an excellent time last year, we again made plans to head out to the Czech Republic for a play at the annual SPP event on the “table 251” secondary line between Tisnov and Zdar n S, 2012s diesel billing was three grumpies in 749008, 751002 and 751010.

Full captions on the individual photos as normal.

Euro Trip June 2012: Part 2 – Czech Republic

Had an eleven day bash in early June taking in Germany, Poland (for a few hours), Czech Rep, Austria and Slovenia

Between the German event and getting to Slovenia we chose to have a few days in the Czech Republic, a favourite country of myn and see what we could pick up.

Tuesday – having arrived on EC179 Monday night, we headed to Prague for the day where we sampled various classes of electric including a fair few ‘gorillas’ before heading down to Brno for the night.

Weds – Spent all day around Brno, picking up 742044 on a DMU vice turn first thing and then covered the local 242 turns before taking a run out to Breclav and back to cover the PM peak 210 diagrams and finishing on a 754 move.

Thurs – Headed to Ceske Bud via Jihlava and then as the afternoon Novi Udoli was silent 749253 opted for the evening Summerau which gets a Cargo 340 over the border to Austria.

Fri – Stayed around Ceske Bud hoping that one of the Sumava turns or the Fridays Only Prague would drop “loud” – they didn’t! Picked up a few more 242s popping and banging around then took the electric route via Tabor (and another 210 ride!) to Prague where we’d pick up the overnight to Vienna – but not before a few beers in the outrageous Vytopna Railway restaurant!
